Back Up Your Computer Data

By Jason Stevens

Information - that precious commodity that lives on every computer around the world.

Every day, millions of people are using the internet, playing music, creating home videos, uploading photos, cracking away at that newly purchased computer game, sending emails, the list of use goes on and on.

So, over time, you start to accumulate a fair amount of information and if it is mainly emails, photos, music and video, alot of this info is rather precious as it is from many social occasions that one wants to keep for a long time.

But what if the worst event happens? What if you turn on your computer one day and it doesn't behave as expected ?

What if a virus or trojan infected the computer ?

It is a fact that an event will occur (and more than once!) that will stop a computer operating normally for various reasons - virus', corrupt software or operating system, heat, mechanical failure, the list is endless.

Unless your a savvy computer person, and especially when you buy a new computer, no-one tells you the importance of backing up and protecting your precious data.

As a former computer tech in the field, I have seen it happen more often than I can count.

No-one is advised that computers are like cars and need to be serviced every 10,000 miles.

Your best bet is if you don't have a plan now, start one, it's relatively easy to setup and will save you much anger, disappointment and stress in the long run.

Purchase a reliable form of backup software and hardware, so when the worst happens, your safe in the knowledge that you had taken those steps to protect your precious information.

Another of those things we all know we should do but, quite often, don't.
I know a good wall if you wish to go bang your head against it!

Hey there Oldcoot,

A wall sounds about right for when things go wrong, maybe a list on eBay with specials on the red x to hit the spot tailor made for each customer, lol

Good information, too many people treat computers as disposable toys, and as a result they find that their computers soon start to fail and fall prey to infections.

Hey There Punksem,

Was the main reason behind me being a tech in the field for three years, almost all the jobs were virus and other nasty removal and showing people how to back up their info.

Great information, Jase.
We have our website backed up by Stores on line. However nothing else is backed up, so this is a timely intel.
Thank you for sharing.
Best to you.

Hey There Frederick,

Another unsung reason behind having backups, think of all those possible losses from not having a personal or business website, blog or forum not being backed up.

What happens when the site crashes or users cannot access the site? It is literally unthinkable. Great to know you have already taken steps to ensure if the unthinkable does happen, you can quickly be back up and running.

Good advice Jason, thanks for that, I try using the car analogy when informing people about their health, again no one tells you that it needs to be looked after properly. The sad part is that you can go to a car dealer and get a new one when the old one gives up, where do you go for a new body?
I think some of them should be shown the oldcoots wall!

It's so easy to save, and not so easy to keep safe. This is a good reminder. I keep a lot of stuff on Google Docs, and use Picasa for photos.

I have never backed up my computer and don't know where to start. Can you do an article on "Back Up Your Computer for Dummies"

A very valuable point you make Bill, I am starting to get alot of questions on where to start and what to do. Keep an eye out for further information.

One of the best ways to back up your system is to use a partitioned drive and install a reliable backup software for example Genie backup professional, It can create and maintain full and incremental backups, ideal for small home and office computers where only a single drive is in use. if however your system has RAID capability, it's a prudent measure to install a second SATA drive and create a mirrored RAID configuration. This ensures that whatever software and data is stored on your working drive, an exact copy is maintained on the mirrored drive as well.

Most motherboard manufacturers provide information on how to set-up RAID configurations. There is also a wealth of information on the internet about how to split an active hard drive to make two separate partitions. Thus creating a separate section just for backups and data mirroring. In short if you have to re-install your operating system (Windows) then your data on the new partition is unaffected by the installation.

Hey There Puniksem,

An excellent point and another great two strategies for implementing a viable backup solution.

A great solution for those whom are very tech savvy with their computer equipement.
