Social Networking - A Place For Games?

By Jason Stevens

Social Networks, most people have at least one account with one social networking site. Whether it be with Bebo, Myspace, Facebook, Ning.com, Friendster, and so on.

Social Networking sites have also become a haven for application and game creators of the online casual game market.

An online casual game is a game that usually will only be played for a short, specified amount of time, usually up to about 15-20 minutes. When certain achievements are fulfilled during each game play, players have to await for specific stats or other functions to regenerate before being able to be played further. Regeneration may take from 1-24 hours depending on the game.

The most common setup is you pick a game, install it onto your social network page and ask friends, by sending them a message to join your game. Adding friends to your game allows one to achieve certain tasks, but are not entirely necessary, yet certain achievements may not be available or may take longer to reach.

Most genre's are covered by a variety of games, including 1930's mafia, sea faring pirates, science fiction, real life scenario, strategy, puzzle, etc.

Almost all these games, have a 'free play' component to play. Additional game elements can be 'unlocked' by applying purchase of credits. Credits will fast track certain events, achievements or internal products (better ships, better weapons, better defense, etc) within the game. Credits are purchased through micro-transactions. A transaction purchase may consist of a dollar to several dollars and may be purchased as often as desired. As an alternative to purchasing credits, some games may also provide sign-up to a sponsored offer for obtaining credits.

The benefit for the game creator is two fold. Firstly, they generate a form of consistent revenue, rather than a one time purchase. Secondly they generate additional revenue with revenue sharing with their sponsors.

The internet abounds, especially on search engines for finding information and tips, tricks, cheats, hacks and walk-through's for the most popular games.

This form of game content and distribution is not just unique to social networking, many new sites over the last couple of years have shown up with similar game and revenue models.

Good intel, as we all need a little time off to relax. I hadn't thought of social networking sites as part of the casual game market.
Keep up the good intel.

I have played some of these games, and it's a good way to interact with "friends" on these sites, but it's also a way to get addicted and you can find thousands of people spending all day and night playing games, without the ability to stop. This for me is where it gets dangerous.

I try to stick to the games where I can play for 10-30 minutes, and that's the whole game, rather than something that goes on for months and just leads me in deeper and deeper, like Evony for example, which I played for 6 months, and had to work at every morning, noon and night, to develop my cities and armies, and to save me from attack. Fortunately I managed to have the courage to say "enough is enough" and broke free.

Hey there Poddy,

I wrote an article on Mobsters on Associated Content, about cheats, tips and hints, it was a discourse of my time playing said game and a few others of similar nature, I further wrote about the pitfalls of taking such shortcuts...
and yes , they are a definite sink hole for whiling away some free time. I played Evony for a few weeks, then lost all my population and havent been back since lol.

Thank you for sharing. I try to avoid these games because it can take up a lot of time.

Hey There Nora,

Absolutely, it is a boon for game creators, not just for social networks, but social games in general, by 2015, sales of such games are expected to outstrip the COMBINED sales of all the consoles and computer games, worldwide.

Makes sense in a way, target audience for these games are generally family orientated and can appeal from the ages of 6 to 90.
