The Lay Of The Land - HubPages in 2010

By Jason Stevens

HubPages, a site very much like and in competition with sites like Squidoo & eHow. With the advent of web 2.0 technologies, which has seen the rise of other sites, termed 'social networking' like Facebook and Myspace, help garner an increase in use, views and popularity.

It entered onto the web in 2005 with an official launch in April 2006.

HubPages is a site that allows users to generate, magazine style articles, called 'hubs' written by members of the site, these are single webpages. Anyone can use the site and it is free to join. The benefit is that users can also add 'modules' that allow one to add text, video, polls, news links, codes (showing examples of web code, not executable), comments, tables, quizzes and pictures.

There is also a facility for revenue generation using Adsense, Amazon, eBay Affiliate adverts and recently Kontera Links. Impressions of ads and revenue from these is split 60/40, 60% goes to the user, 40% goes to HubPages. All information created has the owner of the information retain intellectual property rights and users can also delete or add more information to their hubs at any time.

There currently is over 900,000 Hubs generated by about 180,000 users. It currently ranks at about 216 on ALEXA (for worldwide views) on the most often visited websites. It garners 18 million views per month, according to Quantcast. The site gains its most views from the USA, with its next highest coming from India. It seems to be gaining alot of traction as traffic was about half of this 14 months ago and there were about 500,000 Hubs around that time.

So what can one do with HubPages?

Generate additional income online with informational or promotional articles or write and submit information on particular niches for the sheer joy of it, or even a combination of both.

Users also use the site for promotion of websites, blogs, articles, or even the reverse, using say a blog to promote their HubPages.

There is benefit for those wanting to increase their presence for writing on the web, whether to generate income or to simply write useful information somewhere and be published is entirely up to you.

Same here Karla, I like the fact that I can 'whip up' a Hub within a very short time. Also like June mentioned below, I also like Squidoo, yet my focus for Squid lenses is little different than my Hubs.

I have been using Hubpages for a few years now. I am more involved with Squidoo, but Hubpages is good also. It's never good to put all our eggs in one basket, in my opinion.

Thats the big difference and the fun part, although it is sometimes hard June. Hard as in being disciplined enough to be able to control and provide unique and original material on all the sites we use.

Where have I been? I've never heard of HubPages! :)
Thanks Kangaroo Jase. I'm heading on over there now...

Ladyd,

My pleasure

I started off with Squidoo, and after a while got in to HubPages, which I now use more than Squidoo. I like both, they are an excellent way of getting good backlinks, and both allow for other readers to make comments which helps keep authors on their toes.

odls,

That is how I came about both sites as well. Squidoo is a great site and definitely has its quirks, bonus' and features. I cam across HubPages later and do find that it is in many ways a better fit for me. I still use both, but tend to lean more towards HubPages more often.

Thanks for the feedback.

Good info on Hubpages. I'm a hubber as well. I joined 18-20 months ago, but for the first year I did very little with it. I've been focusing on that site for the past few months.
